Something You Forgot

Written and transcribed by Terry Grant

This is the continuation of a message I have transcribed and edited from a talk Ishvara gave on September 24, 2006. - TG.

Ishvara:

No one has a place, unless everyone has a place. We share the earth, we share the oxygen, we share the raw materials. We also share each other. These are principles of the universe, but the world does not realize them. The ideal of the world is, "If you don't like what someone else is doing, bomb them. If you want what they have, destroy them and take it. Gain control." Do you think that the earth could have survived for this long if control had been the mode of operation? How could this earth evolve, and how could humans come to where they are, if every aspect of Life had been selfish, self-centered and separate? Perhaps things have become too easy for us. We can live somewhat separate lives, we can be isolated. We have good drugs to distract us.

In the past, members of societies were very much dependent upon each other. Each person needed to fit in and do their part, be a part of the group, in order for the group to survive. You can imagine some primitive beings hunting for their breakfast, and a gigantic beast leaps up trying to snatch them. They needed somebody watching their backs, someone who would yell, "Here it comes. Run! It's bigger than you."

What would happen now if human beings were suddenly faced with that kind of problem? What would happen if the moment you went outside there was a hairy creature ready to snatch you up? You would want a neighbor who could see what is going on and warn you, "Don't come out right now. It's not safe." Now, however, it seems the neighbor just sits and watches, or maybe even videotapes what is happening in order to put it on reality TV. Humans have developed a very strong desire and need for violence and destruction, as long as it is "someone else's" destruction. There is a lot of complacency. You can remain isolated from what is happening out there, or so you imagine.

Where are the principles? Where is right use of energy? Right livelihood? Right relationship? Where are these qualities that molded humanity? Where are these ideals that have allowed human beings to progress and to discover? It seems they have become lost in greed, control and manipulation.

Yet I don't think I would be on the planet today if those things were truly lost. They have just become sort of dormant. There needs to be some instigation, some triggering, some movement that causes you to acknowledge there is something more to you, something you forgot, something you are failing to remember. There are certain principles of existence, universal principles, cosmic laws which go beyond all of the past, yet have enabled the past to move to this Now, while keeping things more or less in tact. These are the things that will assist humanity in the next step.

Yes, there is a next step. Humanity cannot survive at this level and frequency of existence, in chaos, separation and annihilation. It is doomed. The only way is up. You can't go back. I have often heard people reminisce about "the way it was," when "things were so much better," unless of course you happened to die of a disease that was incurable at that time. In truth, there were no "good old days." That is an illusion the intellect creates so as to think: "Well, it was better then than it is now, and therefore tomorrow may also be better than it is now."

Some people may be upset with me for saying this, but I'm going to say it anyway: Today is the best day of your life. You just haven't realized it yet. Today is the best day of your life, because today is the day you have heard the truth. Today is the day you know something more than you knew before. You are hearing something that is vital to your existence. Your intellect says, "Oh, I've heard that before." I disagree with you, because if you heard it before, why are you still in the same place you were then? If you supposedly heard the truth but you are still enslaved, you haven't heard the truth. The truth sets you free. The truth brings an end to complacency. The truth transcends chaos, even as it moves right to the center of chaos. This is unbelievable. The intellect, the conditional mind, says, "No way! We just have to keep plugging along, doing the same things we have been doing, following the same practices, hoping the result will be different."

How much of your life have you spent hoping that things would be different? How much progress do you make by hoping things are going to be different? It is time to wake up. Nothing is going to change in this world, unless you change it. I know, that makes you feel quite responsible. That is good for you. You need to take some responsibility. If you keep giving responsibility to the systems, structures, religions, spiritual disciplines, the paths, or the "Other," nothing is ever going to happen. You will keep getting the same story, the same conditions, and the same excuses.
